How do you thank a man who pours his blood, sweat, and tears into his job for nine years, how do you repay a man who takes a irrelevant basketball program, at a irrelevant school, in a irrelevant conference, from the bottom of the valley, to the very top of the mountain, from a mid-major, to a major contender, from an also ran, to an almost ran the table, from barely being mentioned, to being mentioned with the elite. How do you possibly thank a man for this kind of miraculous rise to power, well if your a Memphis fan, you don’t, you blast him, you criticize him, you belittle him, and you tarnish everything he built for you with bitterness.
In John Calipari’s nine seasons as head coach of the Memphis Tigers, he won 253 games, posted nine consecutive 20 win seasons, including four consecutive 30 win seasons, he earned nine consecutive post season bids, and he transformed an average program into a powerhouse. His teams 38 victory’s in the 07-08 season broke the D1 record for most victory’s in a single season, in that same year he was voted Naismith National Coach of the year, and he led his team to the NCAA Championship Finals. John Calipari shattered all coaching records at Memphis, and became the first Coach in D1 Mens Basketball history to win 30 or more games four years in a row, between 2005-08 Cal’s Tigers won 104 games combined , tying the 96 – 98 Kentucky Wildcats for the all time D1 record for most wins in a 3 year span, and Memphis has been the winningest program over the last four years in college basketball.
What John Calipari did in Memphis is nothing short of phenomenal, he made them the hot spot for some of the best young recruits in the game, he gave the school the image of being the place to be for guys wanting the fast track to the NBA, and most of all he made them relavent, but how do they thank him ? By biting the hand that fed them, by hating on the man that made them, by stabbing their greatest hero in the back. Calipari put in nine years of tireless effort, gave his heart and soul to insure their success, and he is repaid with spite and bitterness.
For the last 3 months on every message board, in the comment section of every article written about Memphis or Kentucky, on every sports talk show on the radio in or around Memphis, they spew their hate, and it hasn’t relented at all, they call him a liar, they call him a cheater, they have even stooped so low as to bad mouth his children, and for what ? For chasing his dreams ? The final straw that made me want to write this article, was an interview with Josh Pastner where he talked of how thankful he was to Cal for helping him to achieve his goals of being a head coach, in the comment section they blasted Pastner for being grateful to Cal, you should take a lesson from your new coach, Memphis, when someone helps you, show gratitude, not attitude.
Kentucky fans got a bad wrap for our feelings toward Tubby Smith, but the difference is he took us from the penthouse to the outhouse, not the other way around. When Rick Pitino left he was loved by all, Cat fans were sad to see him leave, but we wished him the best, and respected all he did for our program, only when he went to our biggest rival did our feeling change about Rick.
Calipari did not betray you Memphis, he left for the most prestigious job in all of college sports, how do you hate a man for improving himself, for achieving his dreams, without Calipari the Tiger program would be nothing, zero, zip, nada, you have a hot young coach who is a great recruiter, and with the legacy of success that Calipari established, you will be among the top programs for years to come. Calipari should be having banners raised in your stadium, instead of hell raised by your fan base, when your bitterness subsides Memphis, maybe you will remember who brought you to the dance in the first place.

Cal is, at tleast right now, the highest paid basketball coach in the country. What position he left Memphis in with the NCAA is still to be released. Kentucky was looking for a coach who would take the bad taste away and they went after what they thought was going to be a 'savior' to their program. Playing Kentucky's schedule or at least what they use to play before Billy G. is going to be somewhat different than Cal is use to. He isn't in Conf USA anymore and with the one and done players he supposedly has signed he might not be as successful as expected.
Memphis SHOULD have a bad taste about him.
Kentucky SHOULD be watching over their shoulder for the NCAA. Their pervious violations will warrant a very close watch.
Come on with the if "your" a Memphis fan stuff. If "your" a blogger, use decent grammar. Otherwise, stick to the comments section!
I'm a Memphis grad and fan for over twenty years. Our biggest message board does not continue to bash the former coach. It's not the fact that he left, but how.
As another poster has written, we've had success before and we will in the future.
This article is not very accurate…most of us….over 90%…have moved on.
very nice post leo, I understand the hurt of losing Cal, it is the ungrateful, hate spewing bitterness that i dont understand. He made memphis what it is today, and as far as the recruits I believe even if they hadn't been allowed to follow Cal they wouldnt be at Memphis, You guys have a hot young coach in Paster and I believe you will be contenders for years to come.
Out of the dregs, Memphis wasn't. Memphis definitely doesn't have the storied tradition of UK but we have had our runs. As a Memphis fan, I have to agree that many of the fans have been unusually harsh on Coach Cal. But you have to understand, what happened was a complete blindsiding.
Imagine for a second this scenario….Coach Cal brings UK back from the dead and over the course of the next 6 years, you guys get 5 championships. On the 6th year, your recruiting class is said to be possibly the "best ever"…in fact, you are looked as a virtual lock for #1 preseason (..again…after all you have just won 5 consecutive championships) AND many are speculating that there hasn't been a greater coach in the history of basketball…
Then suddenly, Coach Cal gets an offer from the L.A. Lakers. Boosters from all over the bluegrass state are meeting with him willing to change the name of the city to Coach Cal land. They not only match the price but offer the keys to the city…anything to keep him….
He leaves on a plane without saying a word. The next time you see him, he is wearing a Lakers hat and saying how it was his dream to coach the storied Lakers team….
Suddenly, your great recruiting class has second thoughts. They not only DON'T come to your college to play ball, they instead go to UNC…all of them but one. Because he made his decision so late, your new coach is left scrambling to replace the recruits…..
Now, I know that is far fetched but many Memphis fans, rightfully so or not, felt blind sided by Coach Cal leaving…it wasn't so much because he left..it was HOW he left…and HOW he left the program with so many question marks.
Personally, I don't have a problem with Cal. No ill-will. I will probably watch UK basketball next season. I also think that Memphis wil be fine (we will be playing y'all in 2011 btw in Nashville). But I do understand the resentment. And Memphis fans are pretty fanatical about B-Ball….just like UK fans (I have google alerts for Memphis B-Ball and you would be amazed at how often UK sites come up in the alerts…..)

Your right Katman Uk gets blasted for being critical of the plow master smith who slowly destroyed our dynasty, but Memphis can crucifiy a man that brought them out of the sewer to the pinacle of the sport, and not even be questioned.
No doubt, Pitino was still in pretty good shape with the fans UNTIL he went to UL. They call UK fans bad, but the fact of the matter is we are under the microscope and Memphis fans can turn on the coach that built Memphis and the national media gives them a pass.
Uk has always had the short end of the stick when it comes to media. I hope Cal can change that over time.
Memphis fans did have the carpet pulled from underneath them, but they have rebounded nicely.
To a degree I understand them being pissed off as UK fans were angry with Pitino and still are, me included….But Pitino left for mega bucks to go to the Celtics and wound up at our most hated Rival. Calipari went to a school that Memphis isnt a real rival of…….Probably until now that is.
I dont think most folks were mad at pitino until he went to uvel, i wasnt, now i cant stand him
